2020 was a year that changed the world. In the midst of all of this a team of three of us set out to try and do something we knew was needed: curated and designed a home to feel like a relaxing getaway for special needs families.
The three of us work closely with autistic families and saw a need for families to relax and connect. There are so many cool places to visit in California alone, but so many families that feel it is simply impossible to do so.
Alas, AUTxcapes was dreamed of! AUTxcapes is a vacation home located right outside of Joshua Tree, Ca. It is nestled on a 5 acre property; far enough from others to feel like you’re alone, but close enough to everything you could possibly need.

What makes this home stand out? Well, we prioritized safety over everything. There is a fence surrounding the home, with alarms that you can turn on in case you are nervous about your child running away. There are sensory swings available for the kids to use, but also swings for you parents! We have no glass inside the house, cushioned kids’ room floors, weighted blankets, low sensory theater room, and so so much more.
We hope this is a start of a ton of projects that set out to make neurodivergent community feel accepted, loved, and thought of.

If you feel that this is something doable, go for it! If not something to this scale, something that enables others to feel seen, heard, and loved. The world definitely needs more of this.
If you are scared to travel, know that there are people out there that feel the same. There are also individuals out there that can give advice and recommendations of how to travel with your child! If you are curious of some resources, feel free to reach out. You can do it, I believe in ya.
With love,
Melina
